I started collecting Hakonechloa in 2008 when I found a new cultivar called ‘All Gold’. I kept on finding more and then decided to see if I could get a National Collection. I was awarded collection status at the end of 2014. At the time I was growing the main plants on my balcony and had my backups on my allotment. When I became Head Gardener at Canterbury Cathedral, I had the opportunity to move my collection into my office garden. In 2016 I was lucky enough to get a spot at the Hampton Court Flower Show, where I got a silver award. The collection is small, but new cultivars are coming out now and then, so it is still growing!
